Bloomwood Photography - Essex Photographers

Wedding FAQs

We hope you get a feel for us and the way we work from our website, and below are the answers to a few questions that we often get asked.  But obviously if there’s anything else you want to know then please do…

Where are you based and will you travel?

We’re based in Rochford in Essex but we photograph weddings across Essex and beyond. We’re recommended suppliers at several wedding venues in Essex where we work regularly, but we have photographed weddings at most venues in Essex and surrounding areas.

We’re willing to travel further away to photograph weddings across the UK and abroad. We generally don’t charge anything for travel costs or time, but if you want coverage a long distance away then get in touch and we can tailor a package to your specific wedding.

Which package do we need to book?

We offer a range a different packages which can be found here [link to wedding packages page].

No two weddings are the same and it depends what coverage you want – based upon how late into the evening you want us to be there, and whether you want a second photographer. So there’s no right answer.

We can have a chat and give you advice based upon what you want. For example, sunset is different times throughout the year, and if you want the chance of those we may need to be there until later in the evening.

How far in advance do we need to book?

There’s no particular time that you need to book. But we do limit the number of weddings we take on each year and once a date is taken we have to decline further enquiries.

We often get booked for wedding dates as far as two years in advance, and typically get enquires at least a year before the date. However, we also get contacted by couples who’ve arranged their wedding at short notice only weeks in advance and we sometimes have availability for specific dates.

To check our availability for a particular date, please do get in touch and we can check for you.

What’s your booking deposit and when does the balance have to be paid?
We ask for a 25% deposit to be paid at the time of booking, and the balance isn’t then due for payment until 4 weeks before the wedding day.
Can we meet or see more of your work before we book?
Of course we can! You’re more than welcome to visit us in Rochford, Essex to talk through your wedding requirements or to view some of our work. We have a range of albums you can look through from various Essex wedding venues, or we can provide you with login details to view online galleries from example full wedding days if you would prefer. It’s important that you feel comfortable around us, and you like the style of our work – so we’re happy to answer any questions you may have.
Do we need a pre-wedding shoot – as some of your packages include this?

We find that a pre-wedding shoot is an important part of what we offer. Not only does it mean you get some great, relaxed and natural photos prior to the wedding, but it’s a good way for us to get to know each other before the wedding days itself.

It generally only takes 45 mins to an hour, and can be a location such as your wedding venue, a beach, park or woodland. We literally just have a relaxed walk around and take a few shots and have a chat. It’s a great way of getting you used to being in front of the camera and definitely makes everything easier and run more smoothly on the days itself – as you already know what to expect.

If nothing else, it helps you learns how you like to pose – and basic things like you if have preferred sides to stand – like ‘Ant & Dec’!

How much of our time do the photographs take on the wedding day?

It’s really important that you get a chance to enjoy your wedding day and get to spend as much time as possible with your friends and family.

We have a planning meeting with you in the build up to the wedding, and run through all the photos you want on the day and the timings of what to expect. We usually allocate a small amount of time for the posed group pictures, and that depends upon how many photos you want. But generally we take natural photos throughout the day and perhaps grab you for 5 or 10 mins occasionally in you want things like sunset photos.

But ultimately it’s your wedding day and we’ll tailor things to what you want.

We’re nervous, or don’t like having our photo taken – is this a problem?

Very few people actually like having their photo taken, and so it’s only natural to be a little bit nervous. The best photos are always when people are relaxed. That’s why we think it’s important to get to know you before the wedding day.

But don’t worry – we won’t ask you to do anything you’re not comfortable with. We can be around as much or as little as you want us to be on the day.

How many photographs do we get?
We don’t specify a minimum or maximum number of photos within any of our packages. Every wedding is different, but ultimately we take photos of as much as we can throughout the day (including duplicates of key photos in case someone is blinking or pulling a face!).We edit everything that we consider to be a good photo and deliver all edited images to you. The longer our coverage of the day, or if you have a second photographer, you’ll naturally get more photos. Typically there would be no less than 500 photos and a full day coverage until 10.30pm could be as many as 1,000 photos.
Do we get black and white photos as well as colour images?
We take all photos in full colour, but we also then edit a number in black and white where we think that works for the image. So you’ll get a mixture of both.
How do you edit photos – and do you use photoshop?

We want to provide photos that reflect what your wedding day was actually like and so have a fairly natural editing style. We edit everything photography software called ‘Lightroom’ which enables us to make the colours consistent and balanced.

We use photoshop to edit the odd photo – for example to remove a random object like a fire exit sign in the background of a key photo. But generally we don’t overly ‘touch up’ or manipulate images. Just check out some of the images across the website to get a feel for our style.

Can we print our own photographs or do we have to order prints through you?

Of course you can! You’ve paid for us to photograph and edit your wedding and you’ll get the digital copies that will enable you to get photos or albums printed in high resolution quality.

But we can also order professional lab prints for you or your guests if you want.

Do we get an album with any of your packages?
We do offer a service to design and order you an album and there are literally hundreds of options available. We don’t include albums in any of our packages, because until you’ve seen all of your photos you won’t know what images you’ll want included. The costs of albums can vary depending on the style and how many pages you want included. We’d be happy to show you sample albums and design options, but you don’t need to order or pay for it until after the wedding.
What makes you different to other wedding photographers we might look at?
Every wedding photographer is different and it’s important you choose the photographer that’s best for you. This is both in terms of the style of the photos taken and edited, but also making sure you get on with the photographer as they’ll be around you quite a bit on one of the most important days of your life. We’re lucky to consider many couples that we’ve photographed as friends, and often get referrals to capture the weddings of other family and friends – from previous weddings we’ve photographed. It’s not an easy decision to choose a photographer. So give us a call for a chat and take a proper look at our work. We’re not right for everyone and people prefer different styles of editing – but if you like what you see we’d love to hear from you and have a chat.
What happens if it rains or is bad weather on the wedding day?
No matter how much planning goes into the wedding day, the one thing which no-one has control over is the weather. You really can’t worry about it, and have to put your trust in us to get the best photos for you.Rain sometime creates chances for quirky and unusual photos – but we won’t drag you around in the rain. We carry umbrellas, and a variety of lighting options in case we need to do the group photos inside.Basically bad weather sometimes means we have to be flexible with photo locations or timings, but having photographed hundreds of weddings means we’ve had to deal with this situation many times – but still capture great moments for you to remember.
Are you fully insured – as my venue is asking?
Yes of course! We have comprehensive cover including public liability insurance. If your venue require a copy of our insurance certificate that’s not a problem and we can provide it.We also have professional indemnity insurance, to give you peace of mind that should anything go wrong, there is cover to get anything re-shot if needed. Fortunately we take a lot of precautions and back up photos regularly, and so have never needed to claim against our insurance!
What happens if you are unwell or there are problems on the wedding day?
We’re fortunate to have never had any problems on a wedding day, and as there is two of us, it reduces the risks of there being a problem. But we also have a network of other photographers that we work with and could call upon to provide cover at short notice. We’ve never needed to rely upon this network, but we have covered for other photographers in an emergency. So it’s just a safety net that we have just in case.

If you can’t find the information you’re looking for – it’s no problem, just send us a message or give us a call…
