Confetti or Bubbles?

The tradition of throwing confetti started at weddings in Northern Italy in the middle-ages. To symbolise fertility, prosperity and good luck it was customary to throw sugared almonds (known as confetti).  Over the years, that tradition has evolved and throwing petals or similar ‘confetti’ is a must-have moment at most weddings.  But more recently it’s become common for couples to choose bubbles as an alternative.

Whether our couples choose confetti or bubbles, it’s always pure magic. That just-married moment — the laughter, the cheers, the happy chaos — it’s one of our absolute favourite parts of the day to capture. As wedding photographers, we live for those real, unscripted seconds right after the ceremony when you walk back down the aisle as newlyweds. The energy is unmatched, the smiles are unstoppable, and the photos – pure joy.

If you’re planning your big day and deciding between a confetti wedding exit or a bubble send-off, here’s why both options create unforgettable, story-filled images.

The joy of a confetti wedding exit

There’s something timeless about a confetti toss. The burst of colour, the movement, the celebration in every direction — it instantly elevates your wedding photos. After the formality of the ceremony, the walk between lines of friends of family throwing confetti  are the first steps as a married couple – filled with fun and laughter.  It’s usually a release of emotion after the months of build up to that moment.

Why couples love confetti photos:

  • Creates vibrant, high-energy images.
  • Adds colour and texture to your wedding gallery.
  • Looks incredible in both bright sunshine and soft overcast light.
  • Feels like a true celebration moment.
  • From classic white petals to bold, colourful paper confetti, every choice gives a different vibe.

And if you want to take the moment to the next level, you could even have a ‘confetti pony’ – yes, this is absolutely a thing! Imagine your guests being greeted by the sweetest pony carrying baskets of confetti. It’s unique, memorable, and guaranteed to get everyone talking (and smiling).

The dreamy look of a bubble send off

There are a number of reasons why a couple might choose bubbles instead of traditional confetti. Some wedding venues or churches don’t allow confetti because of the mess it can leave on the floor – or it might just be personal preference.  Bubbles give a different feel to the photos – a light, romantic and airy feel – especially on a sunny day.

Why bubbles are a beautiful choice:

  • Create a soft, dreamy atmosphere.
  • Catch the light beautifully for glowing images.
  • Are venue-friendly (many locations prefer bubbles over confetti).
  • Bubbles float, shimmer, and move in the most magical way.

There’s no need to pick confetti petals out of hair or dress!
